Best Poetry Winner: Growing Poor in the House My Father Built by Matteo Ginder

A pantry filled with nothing

A bottle of dandelion wine

Empty

The leaky roof

The dank carpet

The scattered iron pails

Topped off with rainwater

The earthy scent of rust

The ancient station wagon you have to push to start

The warped kitchen floorboards

The stone steps worn down

So piercing winds flow

Beneath the creaky door

An old alarm clock

The red paint chipped off

The salvaged batteries

Long since dead

Plastic in the silverware drawer

The three and a half-pronged fork

Too many spoons
