El Perro de Piedra by Carolina Hernández

I will never forget how the moon shined the day you left.

Like a crystal in the sky, perfect and clear, with a shine

That was seen throughout the island.

The sea was calm as the battle cry rang, forcing you to leave me that night.

I tried to swim behind you, longing for one more hug.

But you yelled for me to stop and wait for your return,

As you waved from the departing boat

While the horizon devoured your shadow.

Love is stronger than the crystals below me.

I did as you said, stood in place as the moon disappeared every day.

The waves would crash into me, reminding me of your touch.

Our connection was fading with the current.

As I desperately pleaded for your return.

The salty air began to harden my spirit, slowly consuming my essence.

I could barely feel.

I could barely speak.

And all I could think about was you.

I could have moved and disobeyed your order,

But my loyalty kept me afloat.

The rock below me embraced my pain and welcomed oblivion.

I stared at that same moon for the last time,

As the crystals consumed my last breath.

Now I sit here for all to see, serving as their gate into paradise.

So many people come to visit me, but no one can see my pain within.

He never came back for me.

He never freed me from my prison.

I still long for his return as the ocean works to destroy my form.
