2022-2023 Contributors’ Notes

Wanhua Cai is a Communications major from Guangzhou, China. Cai likes to watch movies and play board games outside of classes, and likes to record the moments of life by taking pictures.

Ashon Calhoun is a Communications junior at Penn State Harrisburg who transferred from Montgomery County Community College. Originally from Pottstown, PA, Calhoun loves to write, workout, and play sports. Calhoun also loves photography and started writing poetry at eight years old. Calhoun also has a podcast.

Amy Colleen is a writer of nonfiction and humorous essays, a mom of two boys, and a reader when she can find the time. She is currently majoring in English – Creative Writing at Penn State Harrisburg. She has written for several humor publications on the Internet (including Frazzled, Jane Austen’s Wastebasket, Pregnant Chicken and The Belladonna Comedy) and occasionally blogs about parenting, historical fashion, or whatever book she happens to be enthralled with at the moment.

Chandler Dugal is in his final semester of obtaining his Master of Public Administration degree. He completed his undergraduate work at James Madison University, and plans to attend law school in the near future. He is from the small town of Sidney, Maine, and is an avid political junkie and Boston sports fan.

Luke Foster is a sophomore English major from the York area, but currently living close to campus. He plans to graduate from Penn State Harrisburg. He is incredibly passionate about music and also really enjoys writing, although he sometimes has trouble finding the motivation to create original work.

Cayla Garman (Poetry Editor, Web Editor, and Assistant Nonfiction Editor) is a third-year Creative Writing major at Penn State Harrisburg. Her poetry has been featured in Fission (2020), in the Vita Brevis Anthology “Brought to Sight & Swept Away” (2021), and in From The Fallout Shelter (2022). Her long-term goals include professional editing and the continued studying, writing, and publishing of poetry.

Ashley Green is a student at Penn State Harrisburg studying Business Management and Marketing. Following graduation in May, she will begin her career as a Jr. Internet Marketing Specialist at WebFX.

Lauren Halbruner is a runner-up for the Academy of American Poets for the poem, “Ladies love puncture-hole pink.”

Emily Keim is an English major studying creative and technical writing at Penn State Harrisburg. Her most recent publication was in the Fall 2022 edition of Fission.

Kaitlyn Klein is a student veteran and senior at Penn State Harrisburg, majoring in English with the Creative Writing Option. She was born and raised in Harrisburg, PA. Her hobbies include reading, writing, and playing video games, but she loves spending time with her cat, Edolie, most of all. Her greatest muse is her partner, who inspired her recently published poem, “Colors of Us,” in Fission 2022.

Lauren Krakowski is am a sophomore at Penn State Harrisburg. She is an English major and her favorite genres include creative nonfiction and horror. In her free time, she loves watching cult classic movies, her favorite being pulp fiction, and crocheting.

Dyani Kennedy (Assistant Fiction Editor, Visual Arts Editor, and Comics Co-Editor) is a Creative Writing major on track for his graduation, and seeking to end his college career on a high note. A rising creative, his inspiration from various comic books, superhero movies, role-playing games, and shonen anime has led him to begin publishing the book series EX: I Wanna Be The Hero, the first book of which released February 23rd, 2023. Excerpts of his works were featured in the previous year’s issue of From the Fallout Shelter, and he is planning to extend beyond his original creations to become a “multidisciplinary storyteller,” skilled in arts of all forms from literary, to visual, to digital. In spite of his lofty ambitions, one can often find Dyani casually playing video games in the SEC or quietly brainstorming his next big idea in the library, most comfortable in his own little world.

RebeccaAnn Klug (Copy Editor, Visual Arts Editor, and Assistant Poetry Editor ) is a senior Creative Writing major at Penn State Harrisburg. In addition to her editorial work, RebeccaAnn is heavily involved on campus by being the President of the Programming & Activities Committee and working for the Office of Student Engagement. She has  aspirations to potentially work in publishing, but dreams of moving back to her hometown of Kansas City. Until then, she is excited to continue helping students get published.

Samantha Knipple is a senior at Penn State Harrisburg with plans to graduate in May. Her major is Secondary English Education with a minor in Creative Writing. For the duration of her final semester, she will be student teaching with an amazing group of high school students. In her free time, she enjoys writing (mostly poetry) and painting.

Aleksa Ley is a junior at Penn State Harrisburg studying Communication Sciences and Disorders. She likes read as well as play with her dog. She hopes to keep writing poetry in her free time.

Zian Lyu (Fiction Editor) is a junior at Penn State Harrisburg, where he is majoring in English – Creative Writing. He has a passion for grammar and likes to refer to himself as a “grammar nerd.” In fact, he finds grammar to be the most appealing aspect of writing in English. Zian’s story was recently published in the 2021-2022 issue of From the Fallout Shelter. Originally from Beijing, China, Zian is a lifelong learner and writer. When he’s not writing, he enjoys watching college basketball games, and his favorite team is Duke.

Abhishek Mahakal is currently studying Computer Science at Penn State Harrisburg. Mahakal is from Mumbai, India and is an introvert who spends a lot of time indoors and has developed many cool interests and hobbies. Some of them include sketching and gaming, and Mahakal is always interested in watching anime. One of Mahakal’s sketches, titled “Anime Sketch,” was published in Fission 2023.

Ryan Mellinger is a third-year mechanical engineering major from Willow Street, PA. He enjoys hiking, driving, playing guitar, listening to music, and attending concerts. This is his first time submitting photography, and while he isn’t generally artistic, he has great respect for those who are.

Angelina Memmi (Assistant Fiction Editor and Web Editor) lives in Chocolate Town (Hershey) P.A. She’s majoring in Psychology at the Harrisburg campus, and would love to help people as a therapist. Memmi hopes to find time for writing, reading, and coming home to chill with her kitty, Maggie, when she transfers to University Park this fall.

Andi Moritz is a sophomore at Penn State Harrisburg. As an autistic person, she utilizes poetry to connect with and express humanity in ways that transcend neurotypes. Her current interests include crochet, Appalachian folk culture, and antinatalist philosophy. Her poetry has appeared in Principia College’s Mistake House and Penn State Harrisburg’s Fission.

Long Nguyen is a graduate student majoring in Computer Science and will graduate this May. Nguyen likes boxing and horseback riding, and plans to do surfing next.

Nathaniel Price is a Masters’s student majoring in applied clinical psychology and originally from a small town in Massachusetts. He has been writing poetry for over 10 years but has never published his works. He is passionate about mental health and LGBTQ+ advocacy and spends his free time hiking, writing poetry and nonfiction, and playing guitar.

Addisea Purvis (Assistant Fiction Editor, Assistant Poetry Editor, and Comics Co-Editor) is a senior at Penn State Harrisburg. Majoring in English with a Creative Writing minor, she aspires to have one of her works published someday. This is Addisea’s first time being a part of the Fallout Shelter team and she is happy to take the opportunity to take part in the school’s magazine. She hopes to gain more editing experience outside of college once she graduates and continue editing stories and different media. Apart from working on her two novels, she is found watching all sorts of anime, comics and art tutorials in hopes to improve her drawing style.

Logan Schweiker is from Bucks County and is majoring in Electrical Engineering. Schweiker transferred to Penn State Harrisburg from BCCC and likes to mess around with electronics/computers, but also draws.

Justine Shultz is a doctoral candidate in the adult education program at Penn State Harrisburg. She has a passion for photography and poetry. Justine is the event planner for the PRIDE at Harrisburg LGBTQ+ student group. She also works for Penn State College of Medicine. Justine lives in Harrisburg with her partner and fur babies: two dogs and a cat.

Timothy David Smith is a third-year PhD student in the American Studies Program at PSU Harrisburg. At PSU and other schools, Smith teaches courses in American Studies, history, literature, writing, and communications. His writing and research interests include intellectual and literary history; race, indigeneity, and environment in U.S. policy and politics; and the philosophy of communication in mass media and popular culture

Yusri Zafri has seen quite a few things in college, least of which was a gambling den for nocturnal birds of prey, run by the star of The Godfather from the back of a Chevy muscle car. It’s Al Pacino’s El Camino Owl Casino. The backseats weren’t particularly woomy.
